Alberta’s health insurance for Canadian citizens and permanent residents is called the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan, or AHCIP. Newcomers are eligible for coverage on the date of their arrival in Alberta.

To gain coverage, you must apply using an ACHIP registration form (https://www.alberta.ca/ahcip-forms.aspx). Required documents include:

  1. Proof of residency in Alberta (utility bill or pay stub)

  2. Government-issued ID (passport or driver’s license)

  3. Proof that you are legally entitled to be in Canada (permanent resident card or port of entry immigration document).
